Course Information

EMT Basic Initial Course

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Course is intended to prepare the student for an entry level position in emergency medical services at the basic level provider. The program addresses human anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and a wide range of medical conditions as well as how to manage an individual suffering from a medical or traumatic event. The class is an intensive course equal to the workload of two college courses, requiring a minimum of 190 hours. Classes are held twice a week, with one Saturday class a month. Students are also required to spend 10 hours of clinical training in a local emergency room, which will be scheduled during the course. Upon completion of the course, students will be eligible to take the National Registry EMT Exam.

In order to be eligible to take the initial course, you must be at least 16 years of age prior to the start of the first day of class. In addition, you must be certified in BLS provider CPR. Please email emtsomerset@gmail.com if you are in need of certification.

Once you are certified as a EMT, both NREMT and NJ require you to recertification every two and three years, respectively. You are required to obtain (40) continuing education hours within that time frame, 24 of them being “Core Refreshers”. EMT Somerset offers one session of core refresher classes annually.
